Believe it or not, there are Navy and Marine Corps assets in middle Tennessee, the major one being Naval Support Activity (NSA) at Millington (formerly known as BUPERS). The base was evacuated on 1 May, and operations have slowly been returning to normal since 3 May. As of yesterday, some personnel were returning with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) on site to offer immediate financial assistance.

NSA Millington isn't the only asset, but likely has the widest ranging effect, as all major personnel transactions -- re-enlistments, promotions, etc. -- are conducted there. Another group close to my heart is the NROTC unit at Vanderbilt University, whose personnel are likely caught right in the middle, too.

If you would like to assist financially, please consider donations to the NMCRS. Checks submitted to the Arlington, VA offices can be marked specifically for flood assistance, while credit card donations (for now) appear to be going to the general fund.

Information on donating can be found at the NMCRS site. Thanks, guys!

Dunno how desperate folks are, but I find I no longer need my back-up reservations for DragonCon. It's for 1 king, non-smoking room @ the Westin Peachtree Plaza. As such, its not cheap -- $290/night for 4 nights. But I figured that, with the CFA Bowl (VT vs. Alabama -- Go Hokies!!), it might be needed.

I'll be cancelling tomorrow, so feel free to pass this on to friends, as needed.

I know it's been forever since I've done a real post. And this one won't really foot the bill. I did, however, want to tell you guys about this cool "fundraiser" that a local charity is doing: They are collecting new and "like new" formal wear and accessories to help girls in the Houston area find dresses for prom, who might not otherwise get a chance to go. I've just boxed up two brand new dresses I purchased a number of years ago that I never wore and still have tags; I'm also sending along a pair of navy satin pumps that I bought for the Christmas party, didn't wear, and can't return (past the 90 day window). So, if any of you have any fancy dresses, shoes, wraps, jewelry, etc. that isn't currently in use, please consider sending it their way.

You can find more information at: http://givinggown.org/Home_Page.php

Thanks!

We now return you to your irregularly scheduled flotsam. =)

Okay, here's the scoop: I have a (benign) cyst on my left hand that I'm having removed tomorrow. Because it's on my left ring finger, right where my finger joins the palm, I'm probably going to have issues trying to use my computer over the next few days. Uber as it may be, it still won't do the typing for me.

Damn.

Anyway, for those of you who have already commented on my fic -- thank you. I don't quite feel up to doing individual responses tonight, but I plan on getting back to them this weekend. I'll even use the old fashioned "hunt and peck" method if I have to. (That will be weird though... I've not had to type that way since I was 6!)

Have a good weekend, and I'll see you folks on the flip side. =)

From Neal Boortz:

GIFT CARDS FOR OUR WOUNDED SOLDIERS

As I said on the show today ... my wife, Donna, will be visiting our wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center around the 14th of December. She would like to take some things she can leave with the men and women who have served our country so well. We're asking for gift cards ... Target, Best Buys, Home Depot, Circuit City, Phone cards, Starbucks ... you get the idea. Try to buy ones that don't expire. If you have some lying around, send them to:
