Back last year, when I was doing some research on my (as yet unfinished) Abigail Whistler costume, I came across interviews with Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds on their training regimens for Blade: Trinity. Crappy as the movie was, their bodies were toned, and the fight sequences were a lot of fun.

To get to that point, though, was a lot of hard work -- more than I would ever be willing to put into it, I think: A lower-carb, high-protein diet, with simpler, organic ingredients, as well as two hours or more in the gym every day. For Biel, she not only did the time in the gym, but then went from there to archery for another hour. By the end of things, she was down to something like 5% body fat. Unreal.

Don't get me wrong -- I'd love to be that toned. But 5% body fat is a little extreme (if not unhealthy), and I just don't have two-plus hours to spend working out. I can also say that I don't think I'd want to. In regard to his training time, Ryan Reynolds said that the training really kinda sucked -- you were too tired and too sore to really enjoy being that fit. After doing the Jillian Michaels' "Banish Fat, Boost Your Metabolism" workout for two days this week, I can totally sympathize with that. Yeah, the workout will get easier, but for now, it's kicking my ass. I just can't see being this exhausted all the time!

It's conceivable, too, that I need to bring my food intake up a bit, to meet the rise in activity. Wearing my heart-rate monitor yesterday during my workout, I burned an estimated 710 calories. 7-1-0. Even making allowances for the points where my heart rate slowed and I didn't have a chance to mark it, that's still over 500 calories for about 40 minutes worth of work. Ouch. This burn is probably the reason I'm more than a little wiped. I'm going to suck down some more water, and up the protein intake a bit today; make sure I take my vitamins. (Carbs aren't generally an issue -- I like bread a little too much!) All will help with the recovery and, with some planning, I'll be back on an even keel for the weekend.

...it's instances like this that a real, honest-to-goodness personal trainer would be really helpful. Alas, not in the cards for now.
