Random Flyby Update
Nov. 10th, 2005 07:32 pmIt's been something of a rough week here, completely TKO'd by a sinus infection. I was okay on Monday, just had a bit of a sore throat. On Tuesday, I felt like death warmed over. I took off early from work to head to the doc, only to find out that I had swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and a low-grade, will-not-die-to-Advil fever. Doc suggested I take the day off. I told her I couldn't, but I figured maybe I'd work a half day or something.
Right.
Got to work on Wednesday morning about 8:30 and still felt like crap. I popped in to see what was going on, to pick up a few things to work on from home, and then maybe head back home. I was met by a chorus of, "What the hell are you doing here? Go home!" I was sneezing and snotty and my neck hurt, so I didn't argue much. I then spent all day today in bed, or sprawled across the sofa. Feeling a bit better now, but I still didn't go to karate. I want to give the antibiotics a little more time to beat back the invading army of microbes.

Having decided, after several viewings of Last Samurai over the past year, that Ken Watanabe kicks much ass, I discovered that he was going to be playing the Chairman in an adaptation of Memoirs of a Geisha. This may not be news to you guys, but it was to me -- and thrilling news at that. Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh will also be in the cast. Because I plan on seeing this when it opens, I decided to go and take a read of the book. I went to Borders and picked up a copy. All I can say is: wow. Was this really written by a man? I'm sure anyone who is up on Japanese culture of the time could rip holes into it, but I really enjoyed the prose; he didn't offer too much description of anything (save maybe the kimonos), and really kinda let the reader get the gist of the setting and imagine it for themselves. There were a few times I felt he broke character -- the phrasing in a particular section seemed a bit modern, and a bit Anglo, as it were -- but overall, an awesome job. The "foreward" really drops you into the story, makes it hard to put down. I devoured this one in about two days.
And hey -- any movie that gets Ken Watanabe, Michelle Yeoh, and Ziyi in one go, I'm all for seeing at least once. Pity there won't be any real martial arts action.

Still debating whether or not to tell my father I'm going home for Turkey Day. He'll get all miffed and possessive and angsty over the fact that I'm planning to stay with my mother rather than him. Me, I think he really has no one to blame but himself. I'm just following a tradition that started when I was a year old. If he had issues with it then, he should have said something sooner. Besides, Granny just had back surgery and Mom will need all the help she can get setting up for the Horde.
Meh.
Maybe the next movie on my list should be Home for the Holidays. I need a reminder that, as annoying as things are, they can always get worse.

Fic is currently at a stand-still. The deadline for the
bsg_ficathon is looming right around the corner, and I'm not sure I'm going to make it. The only fic I've started that fits the requirements is another installment to my series, and I'm not sure that's fair to the person I'm writing for. ::sigh:: I guess I'll just get to feeling better and then see what the muses have in store for me.
...
And now it's time to do some more laundry.
::sniff::
And find some Kleenex.
Right.
